New Features Introduced in Collaborate Ultra – September 2020

In the September release of Collaborate Ultra, two recordings features were introduced.

  • Recording reminder.
  • Secure recording links.

Recording reminder

Now Collaborate reminds moderators to start recording the session before they begin. As soon as moderators join the session, Collaborate presents a recording reminder. The reminder is visible until the moderator starts the recording or closes the reminder.

Tip for moderators: Don’t close the recording reminder message while waiting to start the session so you don’t forget to begin the recording!

Secure recording links

As part of Blackboard’s commitment to security and privacy, public access to recordings is now off by default. The recording link generated from “Recordings -> Copy link” will no longer work when the recording public access is off. The message “This recording isn’t available to view” will appear when the shareable link is accessed.

Instructors can control public access in the Recording Settings. When the Public access check box is selected, the recording link generated from “Recordings -> Copy link” is available. Anybody with the link, even out of the organization, can view the recording while public access is allowed. If the instructor clears the public access check box later, the shareable link stops working.

It’s recommended to avoid sharing recording links and keep the recording settings “Allow public access” turned off. Instructors and students can always access recordings from the Collaborate Ultra page as shown below.

Note: Only recordings made after the September release have public access turned off by default. All previous recordings have public access on by default. Instructors can change the access for earlier recordings in the recording settings.
