Good teachers engage students with or without technology

Do you need technology to engage your students? No, even without technology there were disengaged students. They found others ways to pass the time in a boring class. Here is an excellent example of bad teaching and disengaged students.

A good teacher, however, uses various tools, activities and humour to engage their students. This may not include technology, but the engagement is still there and isn’t that our goal? Keep in mind that technology is just another tool for teachers to use. If used wisely, the students will be engaged. If not, they will continue to pass time in a boring class. It just means they can now check their Instagram accounts and surf the web.

In essence, focus on the affect. If one can instill in his/her students a greater sense of self-confidence and self-worth, those students will be able to learn even just with a pencil and piece of paper (if that much). Failure to connect with students on this emotional level means that no matter what the cool, shiny aluminium-backed devices one uses, students’ comprehension and ultimate learning will be negatively impacted. Therefore, it is not an either/or. Technology does not engage students; the teacher does. Technology then can come into play in helping them learn.
